Ocean to Bay 5 Miler 2016 Race Report

Getting the W - what a way to start off vacation!

Final Time: 27:47

The first half of the race had a strong headwind coming off of the bay, and though it was an early enough start time, the sun felt strong.  I previewed the course just a bit, and purposefully took it out hard during the early downhill and before the headwinds got progressively stronger.  I had another gentleman with me virtually the entire way though.  A mile in, I thought he was going to hang tight in the 5:1X range, but as he tried to pass, I kept him on my shoulder, and we both naturally fell into a 5:3X pace.

The turnaround point had a short, but tough uphill and I did my best to open up my stride immediately upon descending.  I didn't create much room, and it was still a two man race.  The third and fourth mile felt tough and tougher, and as I started the fifth mile I thought for sure I was going to be caught.  Each time I dug a little deeper I could feel my insides tying in knots.  But there is no remedy quite like the, "just take ten hard strides"...and repeating that every ten steps.

When I had a quarter mile to go, I dipped into the well and accelerated slightly.  I took a peak back - the distance was close-able.  Already on the pain train, I took one more look as I entered the final straight and accelerated once more to close the door.  I didn't go into full kick mode, but the second place finisher made me earn this W.

6/5/16 to 6/18/16: Last Two Weeks

After the Provincetown 10k, the last of three races in four days, I mostly took it easy with no real workouts.  I still had one more race - The Ocean to Bay 5 Miler on the 12th represented my 4th race in 11 days.  I'll try and get a full write up of that, but long story short, it was a tough but satisfying win.

The rest of the week was vacation time, and the timing was perfect.  I would have enjoyed more mileage, but this down week was well timed.  I was able to finish just about every run with a soak in the ocean to refresh my tired legs.  And Truro is surprisingly hilly, so I wasn't running crazy mileage, but it was another great change from my normally flat commute along the Charles.

With the Friday Night Light's 10k at the end of July, I'm looking forward to ramping up the training in the very near future.

Eh:

5-Jun Provincetown 10k 1:20:00 10.7 AM: Provincetown 10k in a PR of 35:19.  2nd place and a nice gift card.  Good deal!  Another mediocre result, but I'm ok with this one as 5:40s felt really comfortable.

The Triple: Adrian Martinez Classic Mile, Foxboro Against Diabetes 5k, Provincetown 10k - Race Reports

Adrian Martinez Classic Mile
What a fantastic night for a run!  I left work a little early once traffic started to show on the map, and I arrived with seemingly plenty of time.  Kevin was already warming up for the master's mile, so I quickly grabbed my bib number, dropped off my bag off and jogged around a bit with him.  There was a solid group of CSU folks running, so I was able to jog around a bit with Amory, Danny, and Neil and his son all at various times.

I watched some of the mile races for the 60+, some of the 50+, and then I watched Kevin, Amory, and Danny in the 40+ mile.  As they were finishing Neil mentioned to me about grabbing my hip number, and I stupidly didn't realize that we were about to start.  As in, less than 5 minutes to start...I'm not sure how I was so absent minded, but...I was!  My pre-race routine was thrown completely out the window and I had to rush to get my hip number, grab my singlet, pin my bib on, and get my spikes on....all in a matter of about 3 minutes.

I tied my spikes on the track, and had time for one half-hearted stride before being called to the line.  Wonderful.  The first lap was a blur.  I had moved to the back of a relatively slow pack, and I think I passed the 409m mark in 1:14ish.  There was a decent sized pack that had started to separate during the second lap, and I was in no man's land already.  I ham and egged the second and third lap a bit too much.  I felt pretty comfortable, which is a bad sign effort-wise for a mile race.  I hit 1209 at 3:44.2 and closed in 1:11.2 to finish in about 4:56.  I closed the final 100 especially well.

All in a all it was a mediocre performance.  Being 12 seconds off my PR is a lot, but what should I expect after being so poorly prepared?  I'm not too disappointed though - this event is really fun, and to feel as comfortable as I did while running a 4:56 is a good sign.  With a few weeks of specific work and sharpening, I think I'd be in a good spot.  That will have to wait though as I'm going to focus on 10k specific work with the Friday Night Lights 10k at the end of July.

Foxboro Against Diabetes 5k
With one day of easier running, Elizabeth and I arrived in Foxboro amped up for the 4th race in the NERunner Pub Series.  We found a nice parking spot in the shade, and after grabbing our numbers I bumped into Kevin and we jogged the course together.  I thought there might be some hills, but I was wrong - the course is pancake flat.  If not for the very warm temperatures and baking sun, it would've been a great day to run fast.

When the gun went off, I went out quick and tried to gauge the right effort level based on the temps.  I typically don't do well in the sun and heat, but a 5k is short enough that I don't have time to fall apart.  I passed the mile in 5:12, and I was in a small group that trailed TJ and the eventual winner.  As we turned onto the main road, and into direct sunlight, I backed off the pace and Danforth and another HFC runner quickly gapped me.  I grabbed some water from the first stop and dumped it on my head and felt the cold water turn hot as it trickled down my neck my neck.  I was able to find a groove though, and held it for the next ~1.75 miles.  I had lost ground during the second mile, and made a little bit up during the 3rd, but not quite enough.  I noticed Joe O'Leary behind me having a great day, so I kicked just enough to keep him at a comfortable distance.

Provincetown 10k
After the Foxboro 5k, Elizabeth and I made our way to the south shore for my nephew's high school graduation.  A beautiful afternoon meant we would be taking our time before driving to the cape.  So at around 11pm, we finally arrived in Truro and eventually went to bed.  I woke up early enough to have some coffee and oatmeal before Elizabeth drove me about a mile from the start.  I made sure to do a long warm up since I was certainly a bit tight after the previous three days.  On the line I noticed a female runner who had run the Fresh Pond two-lapper comfortably under 30 minutes, and a college aged youngin' - both of whom I expected to compete with.  I chatted briefly, and when the gun went off, I tucked in behind the college guy.

Normally, I enjoy going out at a fast pace to create some separation, but this time around my legs were having none of it.  I was able to settle into a quick pace, but a gap was forming.  As we turned from Commercial Street and eventually onto route 6, I tried to find a rhythm and see if I could close some ground.  Unfortunately, my rhythm was a glacial 5:47 pace, and I made up no ground.  I counted off the seconds a few times to see how far back I was, and the gap remained unchanged - so he had slowed as well, but he was likely coasting comfortably.  With the gap he created, and less than half of the race remaining I didn't have enough real estate or pop in my legs to make a move.  I was happy to notice that the 5:50ish pace felt very relaxed.  A slight quickening of the pace resulted in very heavy breathing, but think I could've held 5:50 with relative comfort for a few more miles.

After passing Elizabeth by the side of the road enjoying her morning coffee, I turned onto Commercial and noticed Sheedy was closing well.  I accelerated just a bit to keep her at a comfortable distance and finished 2nd in 35:19 - a new PR, but it still remains soft.  I'm confident that I'm not far off from sub 34 shape with a couple weeks of good training (and eating/sleeping), followed by appropriate rest.

This race was made especially fun thanks to a delicious post-10k breakfast with Jonathan and Barb at Edwige.

5/29/16 to 6/4/16: 'Down' Week, Not Really

I've got a bit of a mental hang up on trying to hit 100mpw now.  I've got to get over that when I have a race(s) coming up.  Showing up fit and flat is stupid.  I ran less miles this week, but it was still more than I probably should have.  Eh...oh well, it'll be good in the long term.

Since I've got a few race reports to post, I'll just get to the details:

29-May Long Run 2:05:17 16.04 AM: 16 wondering miles.  Found a cool set of trails in Truro, with one crazy steep climb.
Off 0:00:00 0 PM: Oof off.
30-May Easy 0:00:00 0 AM: Rest
Moderate 0:47:35 6.14 PM: 6m.
31-May Easy 1:07:13 8.67 AM: 8+ commute.  Feels like summer.
Harvard Track 1:27:44 11.23 PM: Commute home and to Harvard.  200x2/800/200x4 - all at mileish pace.  Put on the spikes for the 200x4 section.  800 was hard work and I'm simply not sharp heading into the Adrian Martinez Classic.
1-Jun Easy 1:09:26 8.72 AM: 8+ commute at around 8min per.  Trying to squeeze in easy paced miles.
Easy 0:58:23 7.25 PM: 7+ at around 8 per, some with Raleigh.
2-Jun Easy 0:42:10 5.23 AM: 5+ very easy.
Adrian Martinez Classic 0:45:00 5.77 PM: I'm an idiot. Ran 4:56, but ham and egged the third lap, and didn't get to do any effing strides.  Warm up was cut short because…I am an idiot.  Rust buster?
3-Jun Easy 0:46:23 6.2 AM: 6+ at 7:30/mile.
Easy 0:52:00 6.65 PM: 6+ at 7:50/mile.
4-Jun Foxboro Against Diabetes 5k *Pub 1:17:00 9.63 AM: FAD 5k/Pub Series - 5th place in 16:47.  I got out well, but my legs, lungs, and head just couldn't focus.  A mediocre result, but still kind of alright on a very warm and sunny morning.
Easy 0:00:00 0 PM: Alex's HS graduation & a drive to Truro.

Evan's Run 2016 Race Report

The Saturday night prior to Evan's Run, Elizabeth and I drove / traveled for 6+ hours before getting home at 2am - all in order to stay competitive within the NERunner Pub Series.  Needless to say, we were just a little bit tired on the morning of the race.

We showed up with not quite as much time to warm up as we usually do, and I had even less time as I somehow forgot to sign up for the race.  That could've been a disaster...After getting that sorted out I was able to get ~2.5m worth of a warm up, but it didn't feel like enough.  Sometimes you don't get to feel perfect before a race though, but you line up and roll the dice anyways.

I'm not sure how I ended up dead center up front, but I did:

When the gun went off, I pushed pretty hard to try and get to the right turn onto South Street (a quarter mile in) and to stay out of any traffic.  I'm pretty sure I was in the lead at this point, but that wouldn't last too long.  TJ and Lee would glide past me looking comfortable, and I stuck to their shoulder for a bit, with Holmes just off of my shoulder.  We all passed the one mile mark at around 5:08, and I felt ok.  The first mile is gently downhill, so it was quick, but within reason.  I felt like I could keep my effort level where it was, but unfortunately, my effort level had me losing ground to TJ, Lee and Holmes pretty steadily.  With two miles to go, I stayed focused on keeping them in sight, but not dipping into the well just yet.  I felt like that would be a recipe for a disaster of a third mile.

At some point during the second mile TJ and Lee broke away from Holmes, and the gap between he and I stayed relatively the same.  The second mile passed in 5:34, and I felt like I had let myself slow just a little too much.  It was a flat second mile, and I should've been at least 10 seconds faster, but this left me with some gas in the tank to close the gap on Holmes during the third mile.

Between 2.5m and 2.75m, or thereabouts, there was a decent hill, and I found that I had the strength to power through here and I made up a lot of ground.  Catching up to Holmes, I tried to make a really hard move to pass him.  We matched strides for probably 30 seconds, at which point I was thisclose to backing off.  But just as I was about to back off, he started to slow, and I held the surge for another 15 seconds to create a gap.  On a turn, I took a peak back, and I was comfortably in third place, and I'd cruise to the finish without needed to attempt a kick by the incredibly steep dowhill finish.  Not a bad day considering the previous days travels.

5/15/16 to 5/28/16: Last Two Weeks

I'm going to skimp on the details and just give it to you straight - I'm still busy!  An Evan's Run Race Report will be up soonish.

The last two weeks:
Sunday 15-May Long Run 2:06:51 16 AM: Ran a bit on my own, then some slower miles with Eli and Raleigh, then a bit more on my own.
Off 0:00:00 0 PM: Driving.
Monday 16-May Moderate 1:16:22 10.06 AM: Can't believe I squeezed in a tenski!
Moderate 1:20:13 10.5 PM: 10+ with the last bit with Raleigh.  Averaged prolly 7:20 until the last bit.  Finished up with some Poplar Strides too.
Tuesday 17-May Easy 1:06:20 8.5 AM: 8+ at 7:48 per.  Squeezing in whatever I can for miles.
Workout 1:49:33 13.91 PM: Commute home, then to Harvard with Raleigh before track.  600/800/1000x2/800/600/200x4.  5k pace, then ~mile pace for the 200s.  I can't quite get down to 5k pace, and the 200s felt too quick.
Wednesday 18-May Easy 0:44:32 5.66 AM: 5+ at 7:52.  Early monthly meeting screws up my routine.
Easy 1:08:45 8.61 Noon: Three hill route, plus a little extra to get to 8+.  Felt bonkish around 5 miles in…I think I was just really hungry though.
Thursday 19-May Moderate 1:31:43 12.02 AM: Ended up going for some quicker miles, then a bit with Eli as well for an unexpected 12+ averaging around 7:30/mile.
Off 0:00:00 0 PM: Driving to Montauk.
Friday 20-May Easy 1:16:03 9.27 AM: Ran a little solo, and a little bit with Eli.  Cool trail system and great weather.

Saturday 21-May Easy 0:46:25 5.65 AM: Just enough mileage to get to 100+.
Off 0:00:00 0 PM:  Twiggs and Beau got married, and we drove.  A lot.  Then got home at 2am.
Sunday 22-May Evan's Run 5k *Pub 1:06:45 8.89 AM: Evan's Run 5k.  3rd place in 16:38.  Solid effort based on energy level, rest, etc.

Monday 23-May Moderate 1:16:27 10.18 AM: 10+ at 7:30/mile.  Had some quicker miles and big hills this morning.  After dropping my bag off I wondered across the pike to different roads in Newton.  Good hills.
Moderate 1:26:05 11.44 PM: 11+ at around 7:30.
Tuesday 24-May Easy 0:59:41 8 AM: 8m commute at 7:27.

Wednesday 25-May Easy 0:56:08 7.01 AM: Oof.  Whatever.
Easy 1:15:53 9 PM: More oof, but I was glad to do a few more miles than planned.  Thanks Raleigh!
Thursday 26-May Easy 1:00:00 7.32 AM: God I felt slow.  It's warm.    Also, I can't believe it was exactly 1 hour.
Moderate 1:19:23 10.05 PM: I'm surprised I was able to squeeze in 10m again.  Good for me.
Friday 27-May Easy 0:59:54 7.6 AM: Commute.  Whatever
Off 0:00:00 0 PM: Looong drive.
Saturday 28-May Moderate 0:59:06 7 AM: 7m on the spot.
