12/14 to 12/20: BU 1-Mile Race Week

I still wanted to get in the miles this week, but with a company Holiday Party on Thursday and A Christmas Celtic Sojourn on Friday - I was self-scheduled into a reduction of quality leading up to the first BU Mini Meet.

The long run continues to be a staple of my weekly mileage and this week was no different with conditions at Battle Road remaining beautiful. Fingers crossed that 2015 is cold and dry for as long as possible...then again, we have the CSU hosted long runs starting up shortly...

On Tuesday me, Isaac, and Terry were forced outside at Harvard thanks to a seemingly random high school meet.  We were fortunate with some temperate weather and it worked in our favor.  The workout was 200x4/1200/200x4. I planned on the 1200 to be something I didn't mind stopping at 800, as my only goal was to dip into the feeling of the "3rd lap" so it wouldn't be a surprise at BU. I came through the 800 at 2:24 on the dot, then continued on thinking I'd be content at 1k...I ended up stuck trying to do the math and went past the 1k mark and figured what the hell, might as well finish. Anyways, the workout went well, and served it's purpose.

At BU I ran 4:49.53. I'll post a write up at some point, but long story short - 11 second PR and I'm pumped.

The stuff!:

14-Dec Long Run 0:07:29 18.07 Battle Road with CSU. Held a pretty quick pace as the run went along. So…progression long run?

Assault on Mt. Hood (2014) - Race Report

Is this really the only XC race that I have run?  I'm not sure why that's the case, but the Assault on Mt. Hood will remain on my annual 'must race' calendar.

Weather conditions were much better this year than last, but, in my opinion, the course was much more challenging. Kevin, Terry, and I warmed up along the course and took note of some of the trickier sections. We ended up making a wrong turn and missing about a mile of the course, but even with just a quick glimpse I knew we were in for a treat.

After finishing up and getting our gear together, we met up with Tom & Carol and made our way towards the starting line. During our pre-race scouting trip, I noticed a few big puddles and muddy sections about a quarter mile into the race - so I made the decision to start off aggressively. When the race director announced "everyone's favorite two letter verb", I made sure I was clear of any out of control kids.

At the first muddy section, I was in 8th or 9th place and felt comfortable with the hard quarter mile push, and as I was hoping - I was able to stay out of the mud without having to rub elbows with anyone. The course began to undulate, and I was heading up a small hill towards the golf course club house. I maintained position here and was able to pick up the pace as we went down and around Second Pond.  There was a sharp downhill along a choppy section of paved golf path. There were enough roots and loose rocks that I wasn't comfortable immediately bombing down the hill, but about halfway down I opened up the stride and passed one of the runners ahead of me. I did notice that my shoes had terrible grip on the pavement. At the bottom of the hill, the path took a sharp left turn and I could feel the lack of traction I had.

Some of the middle portions of the race are a bit fuzzy, but once I hit the same downhill that TomD and I bombed down last year - I took the same approach. I was in 4th place and 2nd and 3rd were within shouting distance, so I made the decision to run it hard.  I was pretty gassed, but I hauled ass with reckless abandon being sure to stay on the grass just off of the paved golf path...but perhaps I was too reckless!  Just as I was nearing the bottom of the hill I hit the breaks pretty hard to turn towards onto a steep and rocky hill. Unfortunately, as I was breaking my left foot slid on the grass, then skidded over a plastic ground covering (probably for watering the green).  When my foot hit the grass after the plastic cover, my legs got pulled back a bit by the change in friction and I went ass over tea kettle. Fortunately, I'm quite skilled at falling. Once I knew I was going down, I went with it and turned my shoulder over, rolled/slid on my back, and then popped right back up.  Terry had a good view and guessed that I only lost 3 or 4 second.  I think the burst of adrenaline helped make up for that lost time.

Exiting the single track. with about a mile to go..
Going up the hill, I could still see 2nd and 3rd place, but I hadn't made up any noticeable ground. Somewhere around the 2 mile mark I watched them climb a short steep hill and they looked like they might be coming back to me a bit.  I was wrong though - that short steep hill was steep enough so that I had to grab at the grass and almost climb versus run. My legs had a tough time getting back to a fast pace after that and then I made my way into the single track. I felt like I was in no man's land at this point, and as I exited the single track I entered the section of the race that likely caused me to fall back to the pack behind me.

It was a very spongy section of grass that lasted probably a third of a mile, and I felt like the ground was just sucking the energy out of my legs. In retrospect, I should have freaking tightened the screws, consequences be damned. Once I got out of that crap I had roughly one mile to go, and the course remained undulating.

With about a half mile to go I finally heard another runner, but unfortunately it was a CRC runner that must have made a hard freaking push. I started to pick up the pace to keep him on my back shoulder, but I think that was likely his plan: catch up and stay on his shoulder. Once we passed the Golf Club house, we went down that short little hill and crossed the pavement. I was a little nervous that black ice had formed as there was a bunch of sand thrown down and a handful of volunteers. This didn't work in my favor as I had to hit the breaks and make sure I didn't wipe out again - the CRC runner was able to see that I crossed with zero safety issues and I think he may have hauled down after me.

We circled the starting line area and made our way up the short hill before the final downhill into the finishing shoot, and I made a hard push to get some breathing room. The move backfired on me though, and CRC stuck to my shoulder and flew past me as we crested the hill.  Within the span of 15 feet, he had created a huge gap. Looking back, I wonder if that was all he had and he was hoping I wouldn't surge down the hill...but really, I was pretty cooked. Still, wtf, that sucked. Passed with 200 meters to go and I didn't/couldn't respond.

5th place, a nutcracker, free beer and pasta. Great time. Results.

12/7 to 12/13: Keep Grinding

Both track workouts were killer this week.  Tuesday, in particular, was a challenging workout that I've had to back off from when attempting it during recent Tuesday night workouts.

I've been making the decision on how to approach the Tuesday night workouts as I get through each rep - so the past few weeks I felt pretty gassed in the middle of the workout and elected to stick with the 400s instead of going to the 600s.  The reasoning behind this is that I think I get more benefit out of a strong 400 vs a 600 where my form is falling apart. This threw a bit of a wrench in my plans as the weeks progressed, because I wanted to build up to including some longer stuff - but in the end I think it is the right choice. Especially since I've remained healthy - the #1 goal. Anyways, this week I felt good enough to keep going with the 600's. That was nice.

Thursday night was more 5k paced stuff, but the 1k reps were pretty quick and with the miles already in the legs from the commute to/from work and then the run over to the track...well, it was a lot of mileage with some great quality mixed in there. Also nice.

Assault on Mt. Hood will have it's own race report...so let's just get to the freaking point already!

11/30 to 12/6: Not Punishment For a Bad Race

This was a nice bounce back from last week and it's general crappiness as it relates to running. And while I went over 100 miles again, this was thanks to a more flexible schedule...not punishment for a bad race!...really.

On Sunday I started off with a pretty horrible run on Battle Road that was done solo, with a hangover, and on slippery snow covered trails.  And though my streak of 18 mile long runs ended with this 14 miler, I was still happy to get that run in.  Slipping and sliding at 8:15 pace, or whatever it was, took a lot more effort than most of my recent long runs and I came out of it healthy...which is usually a top priority.

Elizabeth and I had Monday off and we took advantage by going for a nice run together out to Belmont to see the school she worked on, and then a quick trip up Snake Hill Road. I continued on after we got home to go pick up a new pair of shoes at Marathon Sports, and ended the day with an easy 10 + 8 double.

The speed/interval sessions on Tuesday and Thursday were the focus of the week and both workouts went well.  I would love to be killing each workout and burning up the track, but I still prioritize mileage at the moment...I wonder if that is limiting my progress in any way. I am still pretty much right on target for the workouts - running the splits I should be based on what the workout is aiming to do, and based on my recent PRs.  But I'm also not seeing the gains I would have expected after averaging higher mileage for the past 12 weeks...whatever, I like the high mileage so I'm going to keep doing it!!!

Enough jibber jabber!
30-Nov Long Run 0:08:17 14 AM: Battle Road solo. Still snow on the ground and I had total shit footing for 10+ miles before I just stuck to the road. My legs felt totally sapped of energy.
1-Dec Easy/Easy 0:07:50 18.26 AM: 10m, with 7 with Eli out to Snake Hill Road and then to Marathon Sports to get some new kicks.
PM: 8+ around the Charles then extra to do a quick food shopping.
2-Dec Easy/Mile Training 16.81 AM: 4+ commute.
PM: 400x3/600/400x3/600/400x2 - averaged 1:12.83 for the 400s and 1:50.91 for the 600s.
3-Dec Easy/Easy 0:07:55 12.33 AM: 4m commute at 8min/mile.
PM:  8+ commute at 7:50/mile.
4-Dec Easy/BU Intervals 21.36 AM: 4m commute at 7:33 per.
PM: Commute home + run to BU + 600/800/1000x2/800/600/400/200 + run home. Got a little frisky on the first 6, everything else was close to on target. Starting at the tape confused me a little bit, I think.
5-Dec Easy/Easy 0:08:00 10.26 AM: 4m commute at 8min/mile.
6-Dec Fresh Pond 2 Lapper 0:06:00 8.9 AM: Fresh Pond 2-lapper in something like 29:30. I felt pretty good considering my typical Saturday morning routine. Gave a HS kid a hard effort on his 1 lap and then kept going.

11/23 to 11/29: Peaks and Valleys

This week started off well with my 5th Sunday in a row of 18+ miles out on Battle Road.  I expected the week to be a bit more low key with Thanksgiving on Thursday, but it was one of my more terrible weeks of running in quite some time. Monday was my typical easy/easy commuting double, but I followed that up with a really lazy Tuesday.

I knew I was heading to the South Shore to golf with Dave, Mike, and my father - and instead of waking up just a little bit early to get in an easy 4-6 miles, I slept in. Ok, not a terrible start since it's sometimes nice to get a bit of extra rest. Then, after the round of golf I had a few beers followed by a long drive in traffic (my brother drove, not me).  After sitting on 93 North for an extra hour, I skipped my planned evening speedwork at the Harvard indoor track...not the worst, because I was tired (it was my first day off in 37 days), and me and Eli also wanted to hang out and get our vacation started.  I was ok with this decision, all things considered.

Anyways, Thursday was supposed to be a kickass 5k race, where I went in nice in fresh and destroyed the field. But instead I had my shittiest race in months.  I ran only a few seconds faster than last year and I am MUCH better shape than I showed. I thought I should have been contending for the win, but after the first mile the GBTC runner began pulling away and I had nothing in my bag of tricks to respond with. With no one behind me to push me, his gap only widened.  If I wasn't such a f*****g p***y, I would have stuck on his shoulder the whole time and then tightened the screws when he started to fade. Instead I settled for second place. Ugh, what a shit race.

So, the last piece of the puzzle-of-crap goes to the Fresh Pond race on Saturday. This was similar to Tuesday in that I'm not too bummed about it - but it was disappointing nonetheless. I ended up running 30:32...which now that I look at it doesn't seem so bad, but it was a freaking struggle. I guess it didn't suck that bad, but I'm still annoyed by the shit race on Thanksgiving so this one can go ahead and be remembered as a suck fest too.

Go to about the 5:21 part. It's good. (Update: I had watched this after seeing Goat Rodeo Sessions on The Colbert Report, but I forgot that this was passed around due to the appearance of Brian O'Donovan's daughter Aofie during the third song. So there is a little bit of a CSU connection here kinda sorta.)

This isn't good though:

23-Nov Long Run 0:07:30 18.13 Battle Road with the CSU gang. Felt a bit tired throughout, but the last 2 miles I felt good.
24-Nov Easy/Easy 0:07:50 10.26 AM: Commute 4+
PM: Commute 6+
25-Nov Easy/Intervals 0 Took the day off and went golfing with Dave, Mike and Dad. Lots of traffic getting home and frankly just pooped.
26-Nov Easy/East 0:07:34 7.11 Just an easy run around the Charles and a bit with Eli.
27-Nov Pilgrim 5k 9.89 What a friggin shit race. I don't know exactly what happened, but I sucked.
28-Nov ADATTFG 10.34 AM: ~3+ around the track waiting for the ADATTFG to start. Freezing, but fun.
PM: ~7 'getting in the miles'.
29-Nov Fresh Pond 8.25 AM: Fresh Pond two lapper in 30:32. Felt like crap the whole time - just completely tired legs.

No splits...what a shame...

Total: 63.98 or thereabouts
