1/15/17 to 1/21/17: About to be tired all the time...

I felt super tired all week long.  And even though that was the case, I would say this week went quite well.  The 20 miler to start the week was my first of 2017, and first in my buildup to Boston.  I was considering running the final 6m or so closer to MP, but the legs weren't quite there and it's far too early to force it IMO.  Still, I finished the final three getting progressively faster, which is a good compromise.

In addition to the long run, I had a hill workout Monday, a track workout Wednesday, a double tempo Friday, and a hilly run in Truro on Saturday.  The weather was fantastic this week, and while that is a lot of quality - I'm sure that I'm going to have some crap weather days where I can make the call to opt for a recovery run.  In the meantime, I'm entering that stage of marathon training where I'm about to be tired all the time.

So, what else to say...

15-Jan Long Run (Jonathan & Barb) 2:32:00 20.01 AM: 20m with the final 3 progressively faster, last two in 6:30 and 6:10.
Off 0:00:00 0 PM: Off, did a lot of stretching throughout the day.
16-Jan Easy 1:22:16 10.09 AM: 10m with first 4+ solo, next 2+ with Eli and Raleigh, then finished up around Fresh Pond.  I added in some "box jumps" on a park bench.
Hill Repeats 0:56:06 7 PM: 4m warm up then 10 appleton hill repeats.
17-Jan Easy 0:53:47 7.08 AM: 7+ commute, got a late start so a little quicker at 7:35/mile.
MLR 1:29:07 10.02 PM: 10+ really slow.  Met up with Eli and Raleigh for a bit, then added on around Fresh Pond in the dark and hopped on the golf course for a bit as well.  Left hamstring has been acting up and wanted the miles, but with less pounding.
18-Jan Easy 0:38:25 4.72 AM: Short commute due to an early meeting.  Still going on the slow side.
BU Track 1:50:05 14 PM: 1000/400/600/800/600/400/800/600/400, 5k/3k/mile pacing.  Adding on 100 x 4 at the end to work on speed while I'm warmed up.
19-Jan Easy 1:04:20 8.06 AM: 8m at 8flat.  Commute whatever.
Easy 0:57:30 7 PM: 7m and met up with Eli and Raleigh.  Nice and easy.
20-Jan Tempo 0:57:22 8.13 AM: 8+ at 7:03/mile.  Wore shorts and for some reason after the first mile, everything was in the 6:50s.  OK!
Tempo 0:48:15 7.19 PM: 7+ at 6:42/mile.  Not a bad tempo.  I would prefer a little longer and faster , but this was a solid overall day with 15m total probably averaging 6:50ish.
21-Jan Hilly Run 0:52:21 7.09 AM: 7+ hilly in Truro at 7:23/mile.
Off 0:00:00 PM: Solstice dinner, great times!

1/1/2017 to 1/14/2017: New Year, Same Process

2016 Summary
Miles: 5060.95
Days Run: 360
Average Weekly Milage: 97.05
Races: 29
Races Won: 1
PRs Set: 1m, 3k, 5k, 5m, 10k, 10m, half marathon, marathon

I think most of that info is accurate.  I'm not including Fresh Pond races or winning a heat of a mini meet (if that even happened).  It would be nice to win more, but the good news is that I'm finishing top 3 pretty frequently.  My goals heading into 2016 were partially time based and I also wanted to set PRs in every distance and consistently be a top finisher for CSU.  I was a few seconds off here and there on the time goals, but I can't complain when I'm able to PR across the board.

For 2016, the Pub Series final standings was not just a highlight for the year, but no doubt one of the top highlights of my short running career.  Coming in 2nd overall felt very satisfying.  I'm sure no Pickleman and no David Wilson made that easier for me, but I still had to stay healthy and perform on a consistent basis.

For 2017, the goals is simple.  Improve.

First two weeks:
1-Jan Long Run 2:04:07 16.26 AM: 16+ averaging 7:39.  I hosted the first CSU long run, which went really well.  I was happy to feel pretty good for this run considering I only had about 6 hours worth of sleep.
Shakeout 0:31:11 4.04 PM: 4+ at 7:43/mile.  Just an easy shakeout.  I didn't nap today, so I don't know why I was so antsy to get out the door for another run.  I threw in 6 strides, and my right hamstring is meh.
2-Jan MLR 1:26:02 10.18 AM: 10+ with a good chunk with Eli and Raleigh.  Averaged 8:27/mile.  Right toe is really achy, but this was a fun run.  Raleigh was excellent too.  Toe and hamstring hurt though.
Shakeout 0:43:33 5.17 PM: 5+ at 8:25…is that right?  Whatever, toe and hamstring still hurt, so I took it easy.
3-Jan Easy 1:04:35 8.05 AM: 8+ at 8min per.
Easy 1:08:09 8.22 PM: 8+ at 8:17/mile.  Totally drenched and running through shin deep puddles along the Charles.  I think my clothes and backpack were probably an extra 10lbs.  Whatever.
4-Jan Easy 1:01:44 8.06 AM: 8 at 7:40/mile.  Just a commute.
Tempo 0:57:24 8.29 PM: 8+ at around 6:55/mile.  Cold and rainy, so I did somewhat of a steady ~tempo.  Felt good at the end and contemplated an extra couple, but it's workout Wednesday for Elizabeth and I.
5-Jan Moderate 1:00:33 8.03 AM: 8m at around 7:30/mile.  Felt pretty achy, happy with the pace considering.
Easy 1:08:56 8.33 PM: 8m with the frist 5 at probably 7:30-40/mile.  Finished up with Raleigh and Eli.  That's always good!
6-Jan Easy 1:03:00 8.03 AM: Watch wasn’t working and it was snowing.  Ran the same exact route as yesterday so I knew the mileage.  8+ at probably 7:50ish/mile.
BU Track 1:49:58 12.1 800(600/400/200/200/400/600)x2 5k/mile pacing.
7-Jan Easy 0:49:19 6.23 AM: Too sore from last night's workout, as I figured.  Had a great breakfast then went out for an easy 10k as the storm was just beginning.
Off 0:00:00 0 PM: Off.
8-Jan Long Run (Mimi Sun) 2:07:54 16.02 AM: 16 averaging 8flat w/TomD.  I'll take it considering the brutal cold and terrible footing.  I finished the last two quick in about 6:40 and 6:20.  Felt good about that.
Off 0:00:00 0 PM: Off.  Considered a shakeout, but it was cold and I was super tired.
9-Jan Easy 1:04:33 8.01 AM: 8m commute on bad footing.
Medium Long Run 1:34:16 12.01 PM: 12m at 7:50/mile.  Pretty good MLR considering the footing still sucks.
10-Jan Easy 1:04:39 8.02 AM: 8m at a little slower than 8min per.  Cold temp/bad footing, and just pretty wiped.
Intervals Mile-Paced 1:07:04 8.25 PM: Ran to Harvard.  400x6/200x4.  Wanted to do 10-12 repeats but I was redlining and my left hamstring hurt.  Crappy workout.  Whatever.
11-Jan Easy 1:02:43 8 AM: 8m at 7:50/mile.  Left glut/hamstring meh.
Easy 1:06:08 8.09 PM: 8m home and ran the last couple with Eli and Raleigh.
12-Jan Moderate 1:00:31 8.01 AM: 8m at a decent clip.  Averaged 7:33/mile but had probably 6 or whatever around 7flat.
Easy 1:03:53 8.05 PM: 8m home and once again ran the last couple with Eli and Raleigh.
13-Jan Moderate 1:00:53 8 AM: 8m at 7:37/mile.  My legs are feeling tired.  Hamstring is still meh.
BU Track 1:31:41 11.88 PM: Commute home then 1000/(800//200)x3/(600/200)x2, 5k, 3k, and mile pacing.  Went well.
14-Jan Easy 0:47:49 6.21 AM: 10k easy.
Off 0:00:00 0 PM: Off

12/31/2016 BU Mini Meet #2: 3k & Mile Race Report

For the 3k, I was hoping some young guns would take it out quick so Kevin and I could click off laps without too much bunching up.  Unfortunately, the race went out closer to 41 to 42 seconds that first 200.  I quickly moved from back of the train to second place by the end of the 2nd lap, then into first by the 3rd lap.  I came through the mile (actually, 1600) in 5:13, with Philip Shaw of Millennium Running right on my heals.  He made a very hard move in the 9th lap, splitting probably close to 35 seconds.  I thought the move was a little too aggressive, and so I split 38 or 39 seconds and he opened up a gap.  Thinking he would settle back into a normal pace, I stayed steady at my increased pace and hoped I would be able to close the gap with 600-800 to go.  Instead, he kept his foot on the gas and he put a total of 12 seconds on my by the finish.  I was pleased with the race though.  I had some bounce in my step finally and ran 9:41, good for second place in my heat.  Kevin also ran a solid race, hitting his goal of breaking 10 - though there is a bit more in the tank for him.  Maybe take another crack at the GBTC Invite?

There was enough time between the 3k and the mile for me to cool down, then warm back up.  I felt pretty good, but I didn't have any expectations.  When the gun went off, I went from lane 6, straight to the rail and the back of the pack.  The first split was extremely slow, and I thought about moving up but I could feel the pace quicken, and there were no open spots for me to get back on the rail if I made that move.  A quarter mile in, though, and I was three seconds behind the leaders.  Joe Fischetti was on the back stretch yelling out my splits and he was yelling at me to move up.  After the third lap, I could tell the pace was slowing just a bit and the girl just ahead of me chopped her stride a bit - so after coming off the corner I made a hard move on the back stretch and through the turn going from last to 3rd/4th at the halfway - splitting 2:27.  Somewhere around this point, Chris Blondin made his move to the front.  When he made a hard push that created separation, I moved into 2nd and tried to close the gap.  With 400 to go, he was less than 2 seconds ahead of me.  He started to really press on the penultimate lap, and though he was barely over 2s ahead of me, it was a pretty sizable gap.  While I never caught up to him, I'm pleased with how I closed the gap over the final ~50 meters.  I finished in 4:47, with the final quarter in 66 seconds.  In an evenly paced race, I think I am a lot closer to 4:40 than I was just a few weeks ago.

12/11/2016 to 12/31/2016: Three Weeks of Up and Down

After getting the stomach bug/food poisoning on the 10th, the start of this 3 week stretch was very up and down.  The Thursday of that week, I did the BU track workout, and that went well enough, so I decided to double at the first BU Mini Meet.  I ran the 3k there in 9:51, and I simply couldn't get any pop out of my legs.  I think last year I was clicking off 38/39 per lap, and for this race I was at 40 and that felt like the spot I needed to stay at.  When I came back for the mile, I was expecting a poor race, but surprised myself by running 4:49.  I approached the day as more of a rust buster, so I that was an "up" day.

The following week was a pretty vanilla week of training, but it was still good to hit just under 102 for the week. Terry and I met up at BU for a "get something done" type of workout, and the 1000x4/800x2 fit the bill.

Christmas/NYEve week was low mileage, with just a bit too much eating and drinking.  After a fun Christmas with the Bugbee's in Plympton, Elizabeth and I drove to Long Island with a visit with her family.  I managed a pretty solid long run on Tuesday the 27th.  I wanted to get something done so the morning of, I came up with a 5/1/3/1/2 tempo/fartlek type workout.  After a 4m workout, I averaged 6:30 for the 'on' and 7:00 for the 'off.'  That felt a lot like marathon training.  My left Achilles got a little bunkish, but it never flared to the point of being too worried.  Nonetheless, I kept the remainder of the weeks run's on the easier side.

On New Year's Eve, I showed up to the 2nd BU Mini Meet feeling better than I had for the first one.  I'm still not remotely sharp thanks to the ankle/achilles/stomach bug train wreck of the past ~month, but it's not like my training has gone in the toilet either.  So I was extremely please to run 9:41/4:47 and finish 2nd in my heat for each race.  Neither is a PR, but they're both close.  And I finished the mile super strong with a 66s last quarter (34/32s 200 split).

Anyways:

14-Dec Easy 1:04:54 8.01 AM: 8m around 8/mile.  Not bad.  Left Achilles still isn't 100% so I need to be aware of that on top of still being sick.

BU Track 12.45 PM: Commute home then (800/400/200x2/400/800)x2.  Added 3 x 100 in spikes.  5k/mile pacing.  Pretty taxing since I'm not quite 100%.

Easy 0:56:19 7.11 PM: 7+ at 7:55/mile
