1/1/2020 to 4/26/2020: All dressed up and no place to go

You know, 2019 was a little bit of a mixed bag as far as I'm concerned.  It was great to be able to finally break 2:40 in the marathon, but I wasn't able to PR in any other distances.  I have a relatively short window (probably?), and improving at only one distance isn't really acceptable.  So what about 2020?  Well, it started off ok. I had a couple of solid 5 milers, with the last being a strong 3rd place finish at the Irish Clover 5-Miler where I was only 5 seconds off of my PR.  The way I finished that race gave me a huge boost of confidence heading towards the New Bedford 1/2, but it was only a few days after the Pub Series when that race was cancelled and the announcement was made that Boston would be postponed.  That seems hopeful at best at this point.  My annual goal of "PR at every distance" seems to be put on hold with no races in the foreseeable future.  And yet the training continues as I'm averaging about 112 miles per week thus far in 2020.  Because why not?

2-Jan Harvard Track 1:24:44 12.00 AM:  1m/200x12...Did a good set of drills and strides with Jon then did basically the same workout as last Tuesday: 10k pace for the mile, comfortably fast for the 200s. Form felt pretty good, but legs didn't have much bounce after yesterdays leg workouts. Still good to get it done.

7-Jan Harvard Track 1:24:00 12 AM: Had a grab bag of workouts and decided to just do basically the same as last Tuesday. Had a good set of drills and strides with Jon and then got to it. (800x2)x3, 200x2.  I was incredibly tired yesterday and felt flat today, so I'm not really worried about the splits. This was a 'just show up and get it done' kind of morning. Always great company chatting with Jon post-workout too.

This seems to be happening every now and then, so...not sure what's up. In any case, I just did a few relaxed 200s then started what was supposed to be a "don't look at the watch, and run comfortably hard" type effort for the mile. Legs were fine, but the lungs weren't. I guess I'll chalk this up to the level of who cares.

8-Mar Irish Clover 5m (P.S.) 0:26:48 5 AM: 3rd place baby!  Really well executed race.  Started off quick, but still exchanging pleasantries with Klucznik.  He started to created a gap on a really tough hill during mile two, but I rallied to his shoulder on the flat.  Ended up closing a really big gap to TJ and another guy by the start of mile five.  I made a strong push and passed them, and tried to create a gap.  TJ hung on me and I was able to hold him off on the final straight.  This was a good one.

Harvard Track 1:14:00 10.01 PM: 800, milex2, (200x4)x2 - 5k, 10k, mile pacing 2 min rest, 1min in rest between 200s.  Pretty reasonable splits considering the legs are still bunk. The right knee and heel didn't cause any issues during the workout, but after sitting on the couch for 45 minutes the process of standing up is...a process. Wuddyagunnado? Certainly not cut back!

16-Apr Easy Easy 1:03:00 8.04 AM: 8m at 7:51/mile.
CR Attempts & Hills 1:01:00 8.33 PM: Went after four segments then did 10 repeats on Appleton.  Pretty strong work actually.
17-Apr Easy 1:02:00 8.31 AM: 8m at 7:28/mile.
Easy 0:46:25 6.05 PM: Late afternoon easy.  6m at 7:40/mile.
18-Apr Long Run in the Snow 2:28:00 20.1 AM: 20+ glorious miles in the snow with Neil.  Legs felt AWFUL for the final few, but the run was great.  Snow on the cherry blossoms was beautiful, and had an older guy stop and take our picture.

19-Apr MLR Easy 1:17:00 10.01 AM: 10m easyish at 7:47/mile.  Both Achilles' were tender.
Fence Repair 0:00:00 0 PM: Quite a few hours on the fence.
20-Apr Boston Marathon 1:12:00 10.1 AM: FOMO run.  10m at a reasonable clip, first mile slow.  Averaged 7:08/mile on the whole.
Moderateish 0:45:39 6.5 PM: 6+ at 7:00/mile followed by some good XT.
21-Apr Easy Easy 1:03:05 8.08 AM: 8m easy at 7:48/mile.
Windy Track 1:14:01 10.04 PM: Decided to take a late lunch to get this done and avoid the rain/sleet. Couldn't avoid the wind though! Didn't look at the watch and just ran on feel. Right Achilles is a concern and will require some monitoring and at home PT...otherwise, just getting it done.

23-Apr Easy 1:02:00 8.06 AM: 8m at 7:41/mile.
OYO Hills x 12 1:17:00 10.15 PM: Legs felt a little meh…once again.  But they held up and I did a couple extra credit repeats.
24-Apr Easy Easy 1:04:00 8.16 AM: Standard 8m at 7:53/mile.  Both Achilles meh and took it pretty easy.
Easy 0:37:06 5.07 PM: Late lunch.  5m at 7:18/mile.
25-Apr Hard Long Run 2:13:00 20.05 AM: Met up with Charles, Neil, and Danny.  Did some at a harder clip.  Both Achilles were a little meh, but held up.  Both hamstrings got really tight though.  20m at 6:39/mile.

26-Apr Easy MLR 1:17:00 10.11 AM:  Had a bit of coffee then just got it done.  Legs a little beat, but not too bad actually.  10m at 7:39/mile.
